Anticipation and Violin Strings
نویسنده
چکیده
The overall framework of this article concerns the social stabilization of linguistic meaning in the no-man’s land between pragmatics and semantics. I show how some fundamental dimensions – power, initiative, anticipation, all related to expectations – contribute to this stabilization. The result of this empirical investigation of an easy expert–novice instruction task – how to change violin strings – is a typology of instruction strategies. The analysis of these strategies is based on expectations. The strategies fall into three different analytic domains: recipient design, anticipation and labelling. The main contrast found is between on one hand opportunism – minimal knowledge, only for the current purposes –, and on the other hand anticipation – the use of present knowledge for future purposes.

Analogies in Medicine: Violin Strings Adhesions
Brief history of the violin. The emergence of the violin in Upper Italy: The violin evolved from the viola da braccio family between 1520-1550, the Upper Italian towns of Milan, Brescia, Cremona and Venice being the most important centers. The term “violin” (from the Italian word violino) is derived from the word viola and had the general meaning “small stringed instrument” rather than “small v...
متن کاملThe Bowed Tube: a Virtual Violin
This paper presents a virtual violin for real-time performances consisting of two modules: a violin spectral model and a control interface. The interface is composed by a sensing bow and a tube with drawn strings in substitution of a real violin. The spectral model is driven by the bowing controls captured with the control interface and it is able to predict spectral envelopes of the sound corr...
متن کاملStrings on a Violin: Location Dependence of Frequency Tuning in Active Dendrites
Strings on a violin are tuned to generate distinct sound frequencies in a manner that is firmly dependent on finger location along the fingerboard. Sound frequencies emerging from different violins could be very different based on their architecture, the nature of strings and their tuning. Analogously, active neuronal dendrites, dendrites endowed with active channel conductances, are tuned to d...
متن کاملModelling and Synthesis of Violin Vibrato Tones
A model for vibrato on stringed instruments is presented, based on the measured acoustic response for an impulsive force at the bridge. The model highlights the importance of both the violin's dynamic response and that of the performance acoustic in determining the fluctuations in amplitude of any note played with vibrato. Comparison of the influence of vibrato on the recorded and synthesised t...

An experimental study of the upper and lower bow force limits for bowed violin strings is reported. A bowing machine was used to perform bow strokes with a real violin bow on steel D and E strings mounted on a rigid monochord and on a violin, respectively. Measurements were systematically performed for 24 values of bow force and 11 values of relative bow-bridge distance at four bow velocities (...
